The City of University Place is a town without a university but with a strong community character and solid ambition to evolve into the 21st Century.  The location got its name when the Methodist Episcopal Church bought land here for the purpose of “establishment of a school of learning” which, when first instituted (1888), was named The Puget Sound University.

Funding was then, as now, more difficult to assemble than ideas and their "Million Dollar Campaign" 25 years later found enough support to create the first buildings of the eventual campus in the North End of Tacoma at the school’s present site.  Today that school is known as the University of Puget Sound (my alma mater, btw).

Long an unincorporated part of Pierce County, residents finally felt it was time to establish the locale as the City of University Place.  That took place in 1995. Since then household growth has been steady, if slight (owing to lack of land on which to build), but long-standing plans are now finally bearing fruit in the commercial part of the city’s core.  Residents have been thrilled to welcome both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

The City’s school district is very well regarded and because the City’s footprint is larger than that of the school district, new residents are cautioned to be sure they know which schools serve the home site that interests them.

Between water activities, breathtaking walks, golf and a comprehensive range of sport options, University Place has something for everyone.

When thinking about homes, you will find both handsome hideaways in some places and stunning water views, looking out over the blue South Sound waters, in others.

You can find three bedroom homes starting in the $215,000 to $250,000 range going on up to $650,000+. Expect larger homes with prime views and locations to start in the $670,000 range to well over $1million.

You can also view homes in neighboring LakewoodSteilacoomGig Harbor or Tacoma
