The city played an important historic role in the development of Tacoma by supplying lumber and water for the old steam trains. It also was a large growing region for hops supplying breweries in Rainier and Olympia.

Like Roy, McKenna was a former timber company town. Located just south of Roy it is located on State Route 507. The city has remained unincorporated.
