Here’s the deal about Gig Harbor, it’s not the “big city” and yet it’s not really a place removed and apart from civilization. Gig Harbor is a “Goldilocks” sort of place: It’s just right!

This came about owing a bit to both geography and history. In Gig Harbor, we are on a peninsula and in the old days, you took a ferry of one sort or another to get to various points and ports on the peninsula. After the Narrows Bridge was built to last (in 1950), there was a toll to pay, long distance phone charges and little to be seen, aside from the woods and bays.

There were few stores and fewer services.   Yet, over time, all that changed for the better.

Today Gig Harbor is a City of about 7,100. The surrounding mail-service area called Gig Harbor has a population of about 46,000. As the community has grown, the retail sector has grown too, but not so much in the scenic downtown area.

Olympic Village, Gig Harbor Uptown and Gig Harbor North are just three of several locations for shopping services and medical care that are first-rate and lessen the need to cross the Narrows Bridge to Tacoma (or to take the slightly longer drive north to Port Orchard in Kitsap County).

The downtown area has retained much of its original look, character and feel. The walk along Soundview Drive is a delight. Shops, marinas and points of interest lie around each bend, and restaurants abound – the Tides TavernSpiro’s and Anthony’s to name just a very few (see my Talk of The Town list).

Gig Harbor homes capitalize on many of the features of the region. It's not uncommon to find beautiful homes with views of Olympic Mountain or Henderson Bay, both of which are focal points of the community.

If living right in the Harbor appeals to you, there are good opportunities to purchase detached homes as well as condominiums, some with excellent views of the marine and mountain scenery.

As we will discover, there are several established locales outside of Gig Harbor proper that offer similar superb views but in more rural settings.About those views: There are 217 miles of salt water shoreline in Pierce County, a lot of that in the areas known as the Gig Harbor and Longbranch Peninsulas.

Along with the sometimes hilly terrain, this creates endless opportunities to see Puget Sound, Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Mountains. Even if you don’t care to own a view property, just driving around is entertaining and intriguing.

The pristine location, sophisticated amenities and easy access to the modern lifestyle has contributed to steady demand for Gig Harbor real estate. The better the views and location the more you can expect to pay. Three bedroom homes in a more inland location can start in the $200,000 range but the lion share of homes for sale in Gig Harbor will be north of $300,000.

Four bedroom homes will typically start in the $400,000 range and as high as $1million+. Luxury estates are not uncommon and these will typically be on the market north of $1.3m and as high as $2.5million+.

For those of you looking for a serene retreat to call home that is only a couple of miles from Gig Harbor downtown, be sure to check out Canterwood and its pristine gated community at the heart of which is the excellent Canterwood Golf and Country Club.

You can also search for homes in neighboring University PlaceLakewood or Tacoma and all over. For a view into what it's like to live in Gig Harbor, check out our Gig Harbor Lifestyle page.
